The purchase of the domestic soda complex in 1996 consisting of Inowrocławskie Zakłady Chemiczne Soda Mątwy and Janikowskie Zakłady Sodowe Janikosoda was one of the key measures taken to develop the Ciech Chemical Group. These plans have ensured a leading position for the company in the soda ash market with a 98% share in Poland and it is considered a well-respected player in the chemical sector of Central Europe.
In 2004, soda companies formed a foundation for a new organizational unit i.e. the Soda Division, which as a pioneer of the separating of Ciech into divisions still forms an example for the others. In December 2006 the Division was expanded by one more soda plant, a Romanian company acquired by Ciech, namely US Govora, the first foreign manufacturing plant of the company. Thanks to this investment the Group is now the second largest manufacturer of soda ash in Europe, with an annual production of 2.2 million tonnes in the nearest future.
The Soda Division generates for the Ciech Chemical Group 36% sales revenues from its products, which have already gained a dominant share in numerous European markets. The Division sales are based mainly on soda ash, its major product (82% revenues) and at the same time the most prominent product in the entire Group (approx. 30% of revenues). Furthermore, the Soda Division is a well-respected supplier of vacuum pan salt and soda-related products.
In autumn 2007 Janikosoda, Soda Mątwy and Elektrociepłownie Kujawskie, the subsidiary of the two former plants, merged to become Soda Polska Ciech. This makes it easier to manage the soda, salt and soda-related businesses and make use of the synergy in the companies that merged. The Soda Division has developed lines specialising in marketing, sales, purchasing and logistics, and through them it participates in the companies' management.
